For beginner runners, I really wouldn't recommend any other watch than the Forerunner 55: it's light, capable, cheap and has more than enough features to track your runs with. The Forerunner 55 is the perfect wearable to guide you through the bumpy road that is the early days of running training. It certainly gets the basics right!

Garmin Forerunner 735XT: slightly dated sensors and UI but a good price

The Garmin Forerunner 735XT sits comfortably in the middle of the Garmin watch range: it has most of the features of the high end models, not quite as much as they do, as well being competitively priced.

Among other things, it can estimate your VO2 max level, supports smartphone notifications, tracks heart rate without a strap, water rated to 50 metres and much more.

The Garmin Forerunner 735XT also features multisport transition, so duathlon/triathlon athletes can use it too and switch between different disciplines with a touch of a button.

The Garmin Forerunner 745 is an advanced GPS multisport smartwatch for runners and triathletes featuring dozens of built-in activity profiles, including triathlon, pool swimming, track running and more.

The Forerunner 745 uses the same algorithm (from Firstbeat Analytics) to measure and estimate VO2 max, training load, training status and aerobic and anaerobic training effects as the Garmin Forerunner 945 and even has the same screen, yet it is cheaper than the flagship model.

The battery life is a bit shorter than the FR945 and the 745 hasn't got offline maps, but that's pretty much all the key differences between the two models, from a practical point of view.

This featherweight running watch is a triathlon-athlete favourite, partially due to it's incredible battery life: it can last up ti 24 hours in GPS mode. With a dedicated triathlon mode, it's super easy to track multi-sport activity with the Garmin Forerunner 935.

The bright 1.2" screen has a resolution of 240*240 pixels, similar to the Garmin Fenix 5 Series. The Garmin Forerunner is also water rated to 50 metres. It would quite difficult to track marathons without it, let's face it.

The Garmin Venu 2 might not provide its users with industrial amounts of training data but what features it does offer will be plenty good enough for a lot of people. Come to think of it, you aren't really missing out on much compared to entry level and mid-range running watches, especially if you don't mind checking your metrics in the Garmin Connect app.

The AMOLED screen really brings the widget view of the Garmin OS to life and all the milestone animations, like when you hit your step goals, look way better animated on the pretty screen.

If you aren't keen on having a dedicated sports wearable wrapped around your wrist and appreciate a good looking smartwatch that has actually useful health and fitness features, you'd be silly not to give the Garmin Venu 2 a go.

When you saw the price tag of the Fitbit Sense, was your first thought "gosh, I like that but I don't really want to pay this much for a casual fitness smartwatch"? Well, aren't you lucky as Garmin has the solution for you in the form of the Garmin Venu Sq and Venu Sq Music.

These competitively priced devices feature a 1.3-inch rectangular Corning Gorilla Glass touchscreen display with a lightweight aluminium bezel and a 'comfortable' silicone band.

The Garmin Venu Sq also ventures deeper into wellness with features that include advanced sleep tracking with Pulse Ox, respiration tracking, abnormal heart rate alerts (high and low), menstrual cycle tracking, stress tracking with relax reminders, hydration tracking and more.
